NLP Skills: Using Them To Establish Great Resource States

If you have read about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in a book, or you have attended formalised coaching in NLP, it is certainly valuable enhancing your NLP skills. When you incorporate NLP skills into your everyday life, you furnish yourself more choices about how you live your life. In effect, NLP offers you the tools and techniques to transform your relationships, your communication skills and to excel in whatever you intend to achieve.

The subject of this article is resource states, as talked about in the context of NLP skills. Consider that you were able to feel however you wish to feel any time you desire, and it is just as painless as breathing. How wonderful would that be!

You know that there are situations when we wish that we could act differently. You will conceivably identify with individuals who have problems with stage fright. Even worrying about it beforehand, we can transform ourselves into quivering wrecks. We recall times when we have been tense in front of others before, and we might also use our imaginations to conjure up all the things that might go awry. And hence, it is somewhat a self-fulfilling phophecy.

You can notice from the example that we actually practise getting into damaging resource states, such as feeling stressed, on a regular basis. Although these states are not particularly useful, we evidently know well the process of state induction and there is no reason why we should not implement the same process to bring on positive resource states.

Given your already confirmed expertise at resource state induction, how would you prefer to feel instead of worried? The choice is yours, but it would most likely be invaluable to be at ease and calm. Well, you do already know what it is like to be like this. Simply close your eyes and think back to when you last felt calm and confident. Maybe it was yesterday or perhaps years ago. Remember everything about it, from how you was standing, how you were breathing, how you felt, what you observed and what you were listening to at the time.

Now, if you are imagining that you can’t do this because you have never felt this way before, then envision how somebody who is relaxed and confident would stand, breathe and feel. Perhaps this is somebody you admire for being this way. When you have achieved the desired state, ramp it up to make it as vivid and appealing as possible. This is where one of your other NLP skills comes into play. This is called anchoring. In this case, an anchor is a trigger for the state change. So, when you are fully experiencing the state such as calm and confident, that you want to re-induce in the future, you could, for example, scratch the back of your neck or squeeze together the thumb and index finger of your right hand; it is your choice. In this way, the chosen action becomes part of the calm and confident state. So, when you do the trigger action again, for example, as you think about or enter the situation where you would previously have been nervous, you naturally enter the desired resource state.
When you grow to be a master of the NLP skills of inducing good resource states and successfully anchoring them, then you bring so many more choices into your daily life because you know that you can’t be thrown by any situation. Even if you are at first, you have the essential skills to retrieve the situation and ensure that you perform to the best of your ability.
