Nlp Into Action

Find Out How To Expand Your NLP Skills

When you learn and try out your NLP skills, you are opening the doors to taking full responsibility (or possibly that should read response-ability) for your life. Not only can your NLP skills be applied to help you learn more quickly and raise your level of drive, but they will also allow you to become an outstanding communicator. What’s more you will be in a position to offer your skills to others both in your private and business life.

The topic of this piece is resource states, as talked about in the context of NLP skills. Suppose you could wave a metaphorical magic wand and feel any way you want to feel, as soon as you like. Now that would be something worth having!

There are probably a number of occasions when you would prefer to be in better control of your emotions, but as yet you have not been able to become expert in this ability. You will perhaps identify with men and women who are afflicted by stage fright. Even thinking about it ahead of time, we can transform ourselves into quivering wrecks. Our imaginations go into overdrive as we return to all the other times when we have felt tense, and then they amplify all those lousy feelings, secure in the certainty that it is bound to recur. And thus, it is somewhat a self-fulfilling phophecy.

You can notice from the example that we actually practise getting into undesirable resource states, such as feeling anxious, on a regular basis. Despite the fact that these states are not especially helpful, we clearly know well the process of state induction and there is no reason why we should not apply the same method to create positive resource states.

And so, what kind of emotional state would be useful in this circumstance? The choice is yours, but it would probably be useful to be confident and relaxed. Well, you do already know what it is like to be like this. Simply sit back and think back to when you last felt peaceful and confident. Perhaps it was yesterday or perhaps years ago. Recall everything about it, from how you stood, how you were breathing, how you felt, what you saw and what you heard at the time.

Now, if you are thinking that you can’t do this because you have not felt this way before, then visualize how somebody who is relaxed and confident would stand, breathe and feel. Maybe this is somebody you admire for being this way. When you have achieved the desired state, ramp it up to make it as vivid and appealing as possible. This is where one of your other NLP skills comes into play. This is called anchoring. In this case, an anchor is a trigger for the state change. So, when you are fully experiencing the state such as calm and confident, that you want to re-induce in the future, you could, for example, scratch the back of your neck or squeeze together the thumb and index finger of your right hand; it is your choice. In this way, the chosen action becomes part of the calm and confident state. So, when you do the trigger action again, for example, as you think about or enter the situation where you would previously have been nervous, you naturally enter the desired resource state.
You are probably now beginning to see the value of practising the NLP skills of producing resource states and anchoring. These are NLP techniques that you can apply to all areas of your life. Of course, the beauty of perfecting these skills is that the resulting states will significantly strengthen your communication skills and have a positive impact on the other people that you come into contact with.
