A Way To Strengthen Your NLP Skills

If you have learned about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in a book, or you have had formalised training in NLP, it is certainly valuable improving your NLP skills. If you bring NLP skills into your everyday life, you furnish yourself more choices about how you live your life. In effect, it grants you the methods and practices to enhance your relationships, your communication skills and to achieve excellence in whatever you want to achieve.

The subject of this piece is resource states, as spoken about in the context of NLP skills. Imagine that you were able to feel however you wish to feel any time you desire, and it is just as effortless as blinking. Just how marvelous would that be!

There are probably numerous instances when you would like to be in more effective command of your feelings, but as yet you have not been able to become expert in this ability. You will conceivably identify with people who are afflicted by stage fright. We don’t actually have to be in the situation. Merely thinking about it can easily bring us out into a cold sweat. We recall when we have been tense in front of people previously, and we might even use our imaginations to think about all the things that might go wrong. And so, it is something of a self-fulfilling phophecy.

You can see from the example that we actually practise getting into damaging resource states, such as feeling worried, on a regular basis. Despite the fact that these states are not especially beneficial, we evidently know well the process of state induction and there is no reason why we should not apply the same method to produce advantageous resource states.

Given your already exhibited skill at resource state induction, how would you like to feel instead of afraid? You would most likely like to be relaxed and self-confident. Well, you do already know what it is like to be like this. All you have to do, as previously in negative situations, is to remember all the moments when you felt relaxed and self-confident and make it as real as you can. Recollect everything about it, from how you was standing, how you were breathing, how you felt, what you noticed and what you heard back then.

Now, if you are thinking that you can’t do this because you have not felt this way previously, then visualize how somebody who is relaxed and self-confident would stand, breathe and feel. Perhaps this is somebody you admire for being this way. When you have achieved the desired state, ramp it up to make it as vivid and appealing as possible. This is where one of your other NLP skills comes into play. This is called anchoring. In this case, an anchor is a trigger for the state change. So, when you are fully experiencing the state such as calm and confident, that you want to re-induce in the future, you could, for example, scratch the back of your neck or squeeze together the thumb and index finger of your right hand; it is your choice. In this way, the chosen action becomes part of the calm and confident state. So, when you do the trigger action again, for example, as you think about or enter the situation where you would previously have been nervous, you naturally enter the desired resource state.
You are almost certainly now recognizing the importance of practising the NLP skills of creating resource states and anchoring. These are NLP techniques that you can apply to all areas of your life. Of course, the benefit of perfecting these skills is that the resulting states will drastically boost your communication skills and have a positive influence on the other people that you come into contact with.
