How To Refine Your NLP Skills

If you have learned about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in a book, or you have received formalised instruction in NLP, it is definitely worth brushing up on your NLP skills. When you incorporate NLP skills into your everyday life, you furnish yourself more choices about how you live . In fact, NLP provides you the resources and techniques to improve your relationships, your communication skills and to be outstanding in whatever you want to accomplish.

The topic of this article is resource states, as spoken about in the context of NLP skills. Suppose you were able to wave an imaginary magic wand and feel any way you want to feel, as soon as you like. How brilliant would that be!

There are probably countless instances when you would like to be in more effective control of your emotions, but as yet you have not been able to master this ability. For example, a lot of people are quite scared of speaking before crowds. We do not actually have to be in the situation. Simply thinking about it can bring us out into a cold sweat. Our imaginations go into overdrive as we review all the other occasions when we have felt afraid, and then they amplify all those lousy feelings, secure in the knowledge that it is destined to happen again. And therefore, it is somewhat a self-fulfilling phophecy.

You can notice from the example that we actually practise getting into bad resource states, such as feeling stressed, on a regular basis. Despite the fact that these states are not especially useful, we clearly know well the process of state induction and there is no reason why we should not apply the same process to generate constructive resource states.

Given your already confirmed skill at resource state induction, how would you like to feel rather than anxious? The choice is yours, but it would probably be handy to be self-assured and calm. Well, you do already know what it is like to be like this. All you have to do, as previously in negative circumstances, is to remember all the occasions when you felt serene and confident and make it as real as you can. Be sure that you truly recreate the experience. The more of your sensory faculties you involve, the more effective it will be. Emotions, sights, noises, aromas and tastes – they are all useful.

Now, if you are thinking that you can’t do this because you have never felt this way previously, then picture how an individual who is relaxed and confident would stand, breathe and feel. Perhaps this is an individual you admire for being this way. When you have achieved the desired state, ramp it up to make it as vivid and appealing as possible. This is where one of your other NLP skills comes into play. This is called anchoring. In this case, an anchor is a trigger for the state change. So, when you are fully experiencing the state such as calm and confident, that you want to re-induce in the future, you could, for example, scratch the back of your neck or squeeze together the thumb and index finger of your right hand; it is your choice. In this way, the chosen action becomes part of the calm and confident state. So, when you do the trigger action again, for example, as you think about or enter the situation where you would previously have been nervous, you naturally enter the desired resource state.
When you grow to be a master of the NLP skills of inducing favorable resource states and successfully anchoring them, then you bring so many more choices into your life as you know that you can’t be thrown by any situation. Even if you are initially, you have the necessary skills to recover the situation and make sure that you perform to the best of your potential.
